It's cool coming across this after I just went through and taking count of all my comics. I have this issue of Tomb Raider #1 and it was one of my favorite covers for TR. :iconandyparkart: was such a fun comic artist to watch. You did a great job on coloring this piece.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it! I would love to do a Lara Croft cover "for real" some day (aka be paid to do it and have it published)! lol But for now I'll have to be content with just doing practice coloring like this one. :D

Thanks for the comment and feedback!

I believe Dark Horse has the new Tomb Raider comic that will be coming out with the new game. ;) I just sat here and compared your colors from the original. I have to say, "I like yours better than the original colors." :D I myself am thinking of doing an Andy Park cover tribute... I want to redraw the A cover for TR#1 and transform it into the new Lara. That's my thinking anyways. :D I hope that one day you'll get to do a cover of Tomb Raider. That would be very cool.

Great job Stacy!
I don't think you need more muscle definition. Maybe what Sean talks about lack of definition is the fact that the background is more or less in the same color as Lara so you don't have a contrasting rim light to make it pop more.
But hey - I think you did a bang up job (love her arm )

Yeah, I didn't want to make her too muscled, so wasn't sure if I should tweak it. Sean is such a great colorist though, so I'm sure he knows what he's talking about. hehe :)

Yeah, you're right about the background. Maybe I should have done something a bit more contrasty to make it pop? It's for sure something I'll think about for more coloring in the future. Thanks for the advice, my friend! You're a sweetie!

heya

You need to work on your light direction and contrasts. Everything is pretty much lit evenly and with the same intensity whether its foreground, middle or background. There doesn't seem to be much definition between metals, rocks or Lara herself.

I'd also look at defining your muscles more... definitively. Give them more shape and form as at the moment they're a bit blurry and ill defined. This is mine for comparison --> [link]

I usually make a radial gradient across an area to set my light direction and to give me some sense of the light intensity (such as on her shorts on mine) before working up the actual area of the picture that I'm doing.

I'd also avoid using the cloud filter for the background. I use gradients and assorted photos of sunsets/clouds to do my clouds and skies (set to soft light or overlay and desaturated) and build up the layers that way as well as painting some bits in myself. You can also overlay photo textures onto stone etc to give an effect. Here's a hint - use rusty metals instead of stone/rocks for rocky areas. It looks better!

cheers
Sean

Thanks for taking the time to leave some critique and advice. I appreciate it. I'll work more on muscle definition - though I really didn't want to give her too much definition to keep her "feminine". :) I'll work on light direction more as well.

Oh and a side note- I didn't use a cloud filter for the background, I painted the clouds in. Maybe it's too flat? I don't know, I'll see about "punching it up" a bit so that it has a bit more depth.

Thanks again for the critique. It's nice of you to take the time to do that! :D
